Exciting News: Mosaic is Now a Public Benefit Corporation!

We’ve been cooking up our most exciting initiative yet!

At Mosaic, we’ve always cared deeply about our social mission: to put plants on every plate, and in the process contribute to a healthier and more sustainable food system. And today we’re proud to announce that that mission is (legally) official! As a Public Benefit Corporation, we’ll pursue a ‘double bottom line’ — meaning that our goal isn’t just profits, but also using our business as a force for good that helps people & planet thrive.

What is a Public Benefit Corporation?

Most US companies are established — and operate — with the goal of generating profits for their shareholders. This isn’t just an implicit goal; it’s actually written into their bylaws, meaning that company directors and executives are legally obligated to pursue profit over social impact.

As a Public Benefit Corporation, we’ll pursue a ‘double bottom line’ — meaning that our goal isn’t just profits, but also using our business as a force for good that helps people & planet thrive.

Sound like a dangerous recipe? It can be! That’s why starting in 2010, US states started passing legislation allowing companies to register as “Public Benefit Corporations”. This designation allows directors and executives to consider both profits and their social mission when making decisions on behalf of their companies.

Why did Mosaic convert?

At Mosaic, we’ve always been passionate about doing what’s right for our customers, our employees, our communities, and our planet. In fact, the desire to create healthier communities by fueling people’s busy lives with plant-centric, hand-cooked, nutritious food is why we started Mosaic in the first place. And since Day 1 of our founding, we’ve worked with the non-profit City Harvest to rescue nutritious food and distribute it to New Yorkers in need with every Mosaic box sold.

So we figured — why not make it official? We’ve been working on converting to a Public Benefit Corporation for quite some time, and today are proud to announce that our new corporate structure is here!

Why are we so excited about it?

Being a Public Benefit Corporation (officially!) will empower our team to think long-term, and to consider our impact on our customers and our communities just as deeply as we consider our profits in everything we do. We’ve always cared about the world around us and wanted to leave it a better place than we’ve found it. And now we can put our money where our mouth is.

Thanks for being on this journey with us — we're more excited than ever for what the future brings!
