One Year Old: An Anniversary Update

It’s hard to believe that just one year ago, we sent our first box of meals out into the world. It’s true what they say: a lot can happen in a year, and a lot can change. But one thing has always remained the same: since our inception, our mission has been to put good, healthy food on every table. And little by little — meal by meal — we’ve gotten closer to making that mission a reality.

Today, we want to take the time to thank our loyal customers for helping us build Mosaic; to share a few of the milestones we’ve reached with your support; and to talk about what we’ve learned along the way and what’s to come.

What we've done

Though Mosaic only launched a year ago, it's been a transformative time for all of us. Within these short twelve months our team of two in Brooklyn has grown into a force of eight. We're also proud to report that in these trying times we've been able to continue growing and helped create over a dozen jobs in our two kitchens upstate.  And while we started out with just six meals on our menu, we now offer a whopping 18 — and counting!

Our impact

Since our launch last year, we've sold over 100,000 meals to customers throughout the Northeast. The opportunity to serve good, healthy food to people who need it keeps us motivated every day, and we owe our community and our customers a tremendous debt of gratitude for their support.

Plus, thanks to our partnership with City Harvest, we’ve helped rescue and distribute tens of thousands of pounds of food to New Yorkers in need since our launch one year ago. It's been amazing to see the impact from our partnership build up month over month, and we're proud and honored to be a part of it.

What we've learned

It's been an unusual twelve months, to say the least — and we've learned quite a bit through it all. Here are some of our top takeaways from the past year:

The going will get tough — and we can make it through together

None of us saw the COVID pandemic coming, but our amazing staff has worked tirelessly every day to continue our operations throughout it, taking extra precautions along the way to keep our kitchens safe, clean, and sanitary. We're proud of our team for the extra work they've put in during these tough few months, and glad to be offering a service that helps our customers through the tough times. Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve donated over 3,000 meals to hospitals, food banks, and communities in need, and will continue to do everything we can to support our community.

Real always wins

Real ingredients, real cooking, real easy. The pursuit of real is why we founded Mosaic, and the last year has affirmed that decision every step of the way. We’ve always known a meal is only as good as its ingredients. That’s why we’ll continue to source only the freshest fruits and veggies and hearty whole grains — all cooked by real chefs so you can feel good about every bite you take.

Plant-centric is better

In our first year, we’ve excitedly watched the world move towards a more plant-based future, and we're proud to be a part of that shift: plant-centric eating is better for our health and for our environment. We’ll continue our commitment to making sustainable food more accessible and delivering plant-powered meals that are good for you, and for the Earth.

We’re thrilled that so many of you stand behind that mission, too. Here are a few quotes from customers that made us blush:

“...Thank you for prioritizing 1) vegetarian meals and 2) recyclable packaging. I’m trying to live a more ecologically sound, less wasteful life” - Carolyn O.

“...I love that the meals are both tasty and good for me. And good for the planet too! Thanks for doing this. It's important work on so many levels.” -Rena B.

“One of the things I love about Mosaic, aside from the food, is their pledge to sustainability. All of their packaging can be recycled, including the individually packed meals. It's a convenience that I can feel good about.”- Kristin B.

We must be purposeful in all that we do

The last few weeks have made clear that to create a better world, we'll need to do more than just cook good food. As we have been listening, self-educating, and digesting what we've seen and heard these past few weeks, it's become clear that we have a responsibility to be actively anti-racist as well.As a food company whose mission is to put good food on every table, we recognize there is much more we can do within our industry to contribute to more equitable food systems (just one component of the systemic injustices Black and other marginalized communities face in this country every day). To start, we’re matching employee donations to causes fighting against systemic racism; giving each of our team members a meal budget to use at local, Black-owned restaurants; and taking the time to reaffirm our mission of making good, wholesome food accessible to everyone. And moving forward, we'll continue doing our part to empower the Black community and end systemic racism however we can.

What's next

It's been an amazing year, and this is just the beginning. We've got lots of exciting announcements planned for months to come: we'll be expanding our delivery radius to make Mosaic accessible to even more people; launching exciting new product categories that go beyond single-serve lunch and dinner meals; slimming down packaging to help reduce waste; and working on tons of delicious new veggie-based recipes to keep our meals new and fresh! Stay tuned for more info soon — we can't wait to share.

As we continue on this journey, we wholeheartedly welcome your thoughts, your feedback, and your input. We'd also like to extend a huge 'thank you' to all of our customers and supporters. We wouldn't be here without you.

Here’s to Year 2!
