Eating for the Planet: The Environmental Impact of Mosaic Foods

At Mosaic Foods, we love frozen food. We hand-craft delicious plant-based meals and freeze them because we know it's the best way to lock in flavor. But for us, frozen isn't just about taste or convenience—it's about sustainability.

When we started Mosaic Foods, we knew we wanted to create food that's not just good for you, but good for the planet. We believe that what you eat matters, and that small choices can add up to a massive difference. That's why we are proud to say that Mosaic Foods offers a host of environmental benefits.

Since 2019, Mosaic Foods has:

  • Shipped over 3.9 million plant-based, chef-cooked meals to customers in 48 states.
  • Avoided over 180 tons of plastic waste: that's the weight of a full-grown blue whale.
  • Prevented 12.2 million pounds of CO₂ from being released into the atmosphere: that is like planting 6,500 acres of forest.

How is this possible? Adding Mosaic to your diet delivers a 4-part positive impact on the environment. Here is how we are working to make our food system a little greener, one box at a time.

1. Less Plastic

We’ve all been there: you order takeout, and it arrives in a mountain of styrofoam and plastic containers. Even the frozen aisle at the supermarket is often lined with single-use plastic trays. There's a good reason for all this plastic: those meals need a lot of protective packaging to make the journey from supermarket shelf or delivery bike to your plate.

At Mosaic, we do things differently. Because Mosaic Foods meals are frozen solid and delivered directly to your house, we are able to use much less plastic than takeout or standard frozen meals from a supermarket. In fact, a Mosaic Foods Veggie Bowl uses 90% less plastic than a similar takeout meal (It also costs half as much! 😉). That’s a huge reduction in plastic waste, and it’s just one of the ways we are working to reduce our environmental impact.

2. Smarter Shipping

How your food gets to you is just as important as how it’s made. We ship our meals in insulated boxes—and our insulation is made with recycled paper!

Because our Mosaic Foods meals are frozen and packed in this high-quality insulation, they stay cold for the long haul. This powerful combination allows us to ship 99% of our meals via ground shipping. This is a huge win for the planet. Air freight produces about 80 times more carbon than shipping by truck. By sticking to ground transport, we are choosing a far more efficient path than express air shipping or the inefficiency of a delivery driver crisscrossing the city to drop off just a few takeout orders at a time.

3. Less Food Waste

Food waste is a massive global issue, but freezing is a powerful tool to fight it. In the United States alone, nearly 40% of all food produced goes uneaten. Because Mosaic Foods meals are frozen, they have a long shelf life, meaning you can eat them on your schedule without worrying about ingredients spoiling in the back of the fridge.

This simple shift helps significantly reduce food waste in your home. Research shows that frozen food generates 47% less food waste compared to ambient and chilled food consumed in the home. That's a huge reduction just by changing how you store your dinner!

4. Veggies Over Meat

Finally, the food itself makes a difference. Mosaic Foods focuses on crafting plant-based meals because they are delicious, nutritious, and incredibly sustainable. It’s a fact that plant-based diets release much less carbon dioxide than meat-based diets. A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition found that a vegan diet can reduce carbon emissions by 46% compared to a standard meat-eating diet. By choosing a veggie-forward meal, you’re actively lowering your carbon footprint with every bite.

Join Us on the Path Forward

We are constantly looking for ways to improve and lessen our impact on the Earth. Whether it’s through smarter packaging, efficient shipping, or celebrating the power of plants, we are committed to a better future.

Thanks for being part of this journey.
